Question Squash - 02-07-2008, 12:28 PM

Hello all Gardeners out there

Can someone please give me some advice regarding growing Squash.

I am fairly new to gardening and have only a quite small plot at the end of our back-garden.

I tried to grow a Squash last year but without success. Tthis year I have tried again and just like last year the plant is growing lovely. It is about 6ft. long and has had a number of flowers. Behind the flower grows a little 'fruit' but a few days later it just shrivels up and dies. Can somebode please tell me what I am doing wrong.

I attach a couple of pictures, one showing the beautiful flower and the other the fruit and how it shrivels up after the flower has dropped off.

I would be grateful for helpful points abd suggestions.

Klaus.

It could be something called blossom end rot. It happens if the plant isn't getting enough feed and water. Squash plants are greedy feeders and need lots of water. Also each plant should ideally support no more than 6 Squash Although plenty appear the plant can't possibly sustain them all.
To get more pick off any fruit that appear to be not growing or shrivelling up. Once a fruit starts growing it'll grab all the goodness anyway. If you water daily when there is no rain and feed at least twice weekly once the first fruit has appeared you'll get a good harvest.
