Unhappy Clay!!!!! - 16-04-2008, 07:38 PM

Does anyone know any quick way to improve heavy clay soil it plays havoc with my planting and I am limited to the types of veg I can put in thanks

Hi Alby!!

There's a couple of options you can use... first one and cheapest is probably composted bark, you can buy this from most garden centre's and helps break down the clay to help with watering and it gives the plants/veg something to root into!
Another option and the one I would advise to you is green waste compost, this is recycled organic matter and has a higher nutrient count than composted bark. This is ideal for vegetable plots!! Again easily obtainable.
Add about 100mm of this to your soil and mix it in thoroughly, you will have to do this roughly 3 times a year but add at your discretion as to the amount of clay you have!!

Thanks Danny I'll give it a try as for carrots I have just made a small raised bed and also put some in a large pot with general compost just as an experiment
